The 1D35 (One Design 35) is a high-performance, lightweight racing sailboat designed by the renowned naval architecture firm Nelson/Marek and built by Carroll Marine between 1998 and 2001. The concept behind it was to create a hybrid—an ultra-modern sportboat with offshore capabilities—filling the niche between smaller one-design classes (like the J/105) and expensive grand-prix racing yachts.

The boat features a carbon fibre mast with no permanent backstay, a deep keel with a lead bulb, and a minimalist, spartan interior designed purely to minimise weight.
Why is the 1D35 a Great Choice?

The 1D35 is an excellent choice for sailors looking for pure adrenaline, high speeds, and a competitive racing character at a reasonable price point. Here are the main reasons why:

🚀 Exceptional Speed and Planing: Thanks to its ultra-light weight and massive sail area-to-displacement ratio (SA/D), the boat is incredibly agile in light wind. In strong downwind conditions, it easily transitions into planing mode, reaching speeds well over 15–18 knots.
🛠️ Easy Sail Handling (Non-overlapping Rig): The modern design uses a 100% jib (non-overlapping), which makes tacking incredibly fast and easy, requiring much less physical effort from the crew compared to older designs with large genoas.
🚛 Trailerable and Easy to Launch: With a beam of 10 feet 9 inches, the boat was specifically designed to sit right on the legal limit for highway towing in the US. It features a single-point lifting eye at the center of gravity, allowing it to be easily launched and hauled out with a crane, and towed to regattas behind a heavy-duty pickup truck.
🎯 Direct Feedback (Helm): Controlled by a tiller, the boat responds with surgical precision to every movement. It gives the helmsman the responsive feel of driving a giant racing dinghy.
💸 Budget-Friendly Entry to High-Performance Racing: On the brokerage market, the 1D35 can be found at very affordable prices compared to modern grand-prix racers (like a Fast 40 or TP52). It gives you access to advanced racing technologies (carbon fiber rig, hydraulic forestay) for a fraction of the cost of a new boat.
